Emilio Sparks recently interviewed with the Crack Distributors Radio crew at PNC Radio, in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Emilio, being the character he is, invited a few special guests of his own… The one and only Captain America aka Joe So Delicious, and Mike Shane Photography. How’s that for an entourage? The reaction was nothing short of priceless and hilarity ensued! This particularly cold Wednesday in December was also the birthday celebration night for the lovely Alice of Homebase NYC. I’m told Alice is a huge comic book buff, so we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to crash her party with a 6′ 6″ tall bona fide superhero!

Here is the cover art for “Emilio Sparks x Cloudkicker Original – Kicks, Chicks, and Porno Flicks” with photography by Mike Shane, cover model Laura Montas and graphics by Frankie Fun Stuff. We’ve all been diligently working on this project for some time and it’s finally time to release it to the world for all to hear. The album drops Jan 4th, 2010. Mike Cash, J Glaze, Tekst (of The Higher Concept) and Mighty Owe shared producing all the 17 track release.

AWE magazine recently gave me a feature story. The piece focused on my collaborative works with talented Staten Island artists and musicians. I was very happy with the article. The response from my family, friends, and fans was completely & utterly humbling. Thank you all for your continued support. Let’s go!!!

I must take some time to thank Ben Johnson and Rob Bailey from the Staten Island Advance. Without your continued support of the local creative communities, much of these artistic efforts might go publicly unrecognized and more-so, unpublished. Your efforts are appreciated, not just by me, for the fact that you give local readers geographically relevant stories worth reading. I know for a FACT, that AWE has given many Staten Islanders something to be proud of; a reminder that despite pop-cultural opinion, there are intelligent, articulate, open-minded, creative residents of this rock we live on. You both play important roles in exposing the efforts of those that exceed the chains of our stereotypes. And for that I thank you.

“With veritable terabytes of digital images featuring the people and spaces creating and housing art in Shaolin, Shane is one of the Island’s busiest and best documentarians. His work also helps put the borough’s burgeoning “new” arts movement on the map.

“My work reflects where I come from by proxy,” says Shane. “I rep Staten Island hard, and I’m happy to say that my portfolio is 90 percent local artists.”

“The best part about working with local artists or bands is that they’re hungry,” says the new Castleton Corners resident, who recently moved from his apartment near Stapleton’s The Cup so he could live alone for a change. “You’re giving them something they will definitely use, and you can learn from the interaction.”

Anyone who knows the sinewy, long-haired ball of energy can probably vouch for his ability to coerce or cajole his subjects into posing, precariously or not, in harmony with his own vision. And while not everything he shoots is gold, Shane seems to have some important attributes as a photographer: An insatiable appetite for using his camera, a fearlessness in getting the shots he wants and maybe, most of all, a love for his own surroundings.

Reservoir Dogs @ Snug Underground

Gena Mimozo was responsible for directing and producing Snug Underground’s stage reading of Quentein Tarantino’s cult classic “Reservoir Dogs”. You can read more about this fantastic event in the archive of AWE Magazine.

RESERVOIR DOGS — Don’t stress, diehard fans of “Reservoir Dogs,” this weekend’s staged read will include the good, the bad and the bloody of Quentein Tarantino’s cult flick. Yes, Mr. Pink, Mr. Blond, Mr. White and their associates will be wearing black suits and black ties. The slow-motion shot where they all walk to their cars will be acted out, as will the (cringe) cutting-off-of-the-ear scene.

“I want to keep it as much like the movie as possible,” says director Gena Mimozo. “They do the slow-motion intro, and a lot of the other visual shots are acted out as well.”

But “Reservoir Dogs” was really picked more for its words than its visuals.

“It’s the language that pulled me to it,” says Mimozo. “I really like the fact that you could sit in the audience and close your eyes, and it would still be as enthralling as if you were watching it on screen. The way the characters deliver their lines, the way they interact, it’s really fun to listen to.”

By fun, Mimozo means four-letter words, pontificating from Steve Buscemi’s character Mr. Pink about why he doesn’t believe in tipping waitresses, and the ensuing mayhem when a planned robbery of diamonds goes horribly wrong. – (C) AWE – February 14, 2008
